Discover the World's Largest Private Manuscript Collection in Buffalo

Originally built as the First Church of Christ, Scientist, this neoclassical building was later converted to a Karpeles Manuscript Library. It is located at 220 North St, Buffalo, NY 14201 A private collection of more than 1 million original manuscripts, the library is the largest private collection of original documents in the world. The building's neoclassical design is evident in the architecture, which features fluted columns, terra cotta decor, and bronze light fixtures. The main floor exhibit hall has a high ceiling, making it suitable for musical concerts. The museum is free to visit and discover.


The library houses a large collection of historical documents, including the original draft of the Bill of Rights of the United States, Roget's Thesaurus, and Webster's Dictionary. Unveiling History: Rare Prison Letters, Confessions & Iconic Notes


The Library's permanent collection of historical documents is complemented by rotating traveling exhibits. The current exhibit, Letters From the Pen, features prison letters from John Dillinger and Al Capone, as well as a letter from Gandhi while imprisoned. In addition, there is an original confession letter from Leon F. Czolgosz, a letter from Galileo under house arrest, and notes from the wedding song "Steamboat Willie".


The building also has an antique book library and children's center. Several original manuscripts are displayed in the museum, and visitors may also participate in free programs. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The original organ has been preserved in the rotunda. The building's interior was ravaged by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, but the chapel reopened in 1990.


The Karpeles Manuscript Library also has two other branches in Buffalo, New York. These locations are located on the corner of Elmwood Avenue and North Street. These buildings are located near the Wright Park Arboretum. They are located on a triangular lot. Each building was originally built as a church. The museum also displays a computer guidance system used by the Apollo lander on the moon.


The Karpeles Manuscript library is supported by schools and colleges throughout the Twin Cities area. The library also provides free services and special educational programs for schools and students.
